Subject: So much music, and all so good

Oi! Todo beleza over at Beleza-Music hq. In this exciting episode, Jneiro Jarel record release party, lots of new music posted from Ayro, So:el and 99, internet radio you must needs check, hip hop for tsunami victims, and more globetrotting, yeehaa!

Tonight in Philly! Signal: Jneiro Jarel record release party @ Fluid
The much anticipated "Three Piece Puzzle" is finally dropping on Kindred Spirits. My boy has been getting airtime from Gilles and Benji, and you hear him all over London from clubs to record stores. And charmingly enough, it's worth the hype! If you're in the area, come down to Fluid tonight for the monthly Signal. It's gonna be a killer with JJ alongside DJ Cooper from Urban Renewal Records (Durham, NC) bringing the heat via UK garage, reggae, and all the choons that's fit to rinse, all-women b-girl crew Montazh mashing up the floor, plus fellow residents Ultraviolet (Seven 9 Group, Ladies Love Hip Hop), Sezy (www.djsezy.com) and muhself. New music at Beleza-Music.org: Ayro, So:el, and 99
It's all about the content this time. Can't remember if I mentioned it before or not, but we've posted the recording of Ayro's live Philadelphia debut this past July. It was a total basement vibe, a room full of heads, and it shows in the set. Really nice stuff, possibly quite different from other sets you've heard from our boy in Detroit. www.beleza-music.org/trackssets.

So:el is an up-and-comer who's getting played by just about everyone who gets turned onto his stuff. He hails from Reading, England, is working with Amalgama Records plus another entity that, for the moment, I'm keeping schtum, and counts Kaidi Tatham among his greatest influences. Read all about it, check a list of his favorite all-time tracks, listen to some samples of original work, and download an adorable picture of him travelling the world for your desktop background at www.beleza-music.org/profiles/soel.html.

Lastly, new mix by 99 called "Me Diz Que Sou Ridiculo" (They Tell Me I'm Ridiculous) which is apropos for a mix that goes from afropop to hard techno to brukbeat to deep downtempo to experimental jazz in 80 minutes. The love coming in is just as schizoid: getting stuck in the car stereos of hip hoppers, techno lovers, classical/experimental violinists, ambient soundscape artists, breakcore punks, grime hoodlums, political/radio activist types and of course, broken beat heads. Whaaa???? Yeah, I don't know. It's fun tho, check it out. www.beleza-music.org/trackssets.

Good, honest radio at www.wkdu.org and www.wrti.org
My boys Junior and Lil Dave run a show called Evesdrop at www.wkdu.org (or 91.7fm for you locals) Fridays 6-9pm EST. It's HEAT. From classics to exclusives to essential interviews, it's drawing listeners from literally all over the world. I know because they get long distance phone calls from people overseas who stayed up until some ungoddessly hour just to listen. That's flattery, and it's something you should check out. Full info @ www.recordbreakin.com.

While we're on radio, you HAVE GOT to check www.wrti.org (90.1fm) Fridays from 10pm-2am EST for J. Michael Harrison's "The Bridge". I have been blown away by this show for years. He highlights some of the most fascinating, bleeding edge, rawkus and ruff, intensely soulful and sometimes very strange jazz on the edge of hip hop. He's where I first heard Quite Sane and Burnt Sugar, and he'll also play Jazzanova, et al. This show is insane. Instant education every week, and things you WILL NOT hear anywhere else. Ok, that's your warning. Check it or get left behind.

Next time: welcome to peer/podcasting... (you know who you are)

This Sat: "Hip Hop for the People" benefit for tsunami victims (Phila)
The other day, BBC World Service had a story about Papua New Guinea. Their landmass has been reduced by some ridiculous amount, and their entire water table has been replaced with seawater. The island has no fresh water. When the dry season comes, it's gonna be bad news. The people there have no intention of leaving, and I can understand not leaving your homeland, but what do you do with a destroyed water table? These are the kinds of questions we may be answering for a generation or more.

Among the efforts to send help to our human family eastward, is this, which besides being great music you can feel great about, is a nifty way to warm up for Jazzy Jeff's b-day bash later that night @ Shampoo:

While we're on the topic of do-gooders, I encourage those of us in the US to protest the inauguration today if there is a group gathering in your city. Another form of dissent going around is NODD, Not One Damn Dime, kinda like a big anti-Bush Buy Nothing Day. We have to keep up the energy, people. It's only going to take a little bit more to tip things back to the sanity side, and we have a responsibility to the rest of the world to fix this mess. Also, I for one, am completely charmed by this new-found resource, www.geekcorps.org, which is exactly what it sounds like...Peace Corps for geeks! HOT! I think I just might apply when I get back. Gee, 99, where ya goin? Well, I'm glad you asked...

BRASIL!!!!!
News is out! After years of lovingly studying the music, language, and culture, I'm blowing this freezing pop stand and heading toward the equator. For 2 months! Starting at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre and ending in Salvador, Bahia, I'm going to explore every nook and cranny I can find. I'll also have a laptop, so if you know anyone who wants to make friends with a goofy but nice American, and maybe get a nice dj for beer and bus fare, please, please hit me back. I will be bringing home many goodies to share with all, (can you say, Carnaval with a mic and minidisk recorder??) and also blogging while I'm there, so I'll have that link up soon as I get it sorted. If you ever had a burning question about Brazilian music or culture, or want to investigate a band or a scene, let me know and I'll do some research while I'm there.

As usual, plenty to keep you busy in the 215 and worldwide...
