REPRESENT
A Real Political Party
September 15, 2004. The Represent team, a diverse group of young, concerned citizens, joins forces with Beleza Music, Driving Votes, Swing the State, Urban Voters Campaign, Young Voter Alliance and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell to celebrate Philadelphia's commitment to democracy. On Saturday September 25, 2004 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. citizens of Philadelphia will dance for democracy. People of all colors and ages are invited to Malcolm X Park to celebrate the right to vote, redeem political power and ensure all votes are cast in November.
An incredible line up of DJs including New York's DJ Ras and DJ Tabu, Phillee Blunt of Philadelphia's Illvibe Collective, Joni Love, and 99 will electrify the park. As party-goers dance in the sun, the Represent team and partners will distribute registration forms and be on-hand to answer voting-related questions.
During the 2000 Presidential campaign, Philadelphia raised the bar for voter registration, signing up record numbers of citizens. Approximately 90% of eligible voters registered to vote. Of those registered, nearly 55% cast their ballots on Election Day. With recent polls showing the two major party candidates neck and neck in Pennsylvania, voter turnout will be vital again in this year.s election. The Represent team joins the many activists and concerned citizens offering their energy to achieve high voter turnout on November 2, 2004.
October 4th is the deadline for Pennsylvania voter registration. Saturday September 25, 2004 citizens dance for democracy at a real political party.

Friday, June 4
Big City: Summer Love Raleigh Durham, NC Urban Renewal Records
After a wonderful time celebrating North Carolina at Big City: Collards
& BBQ, we at Urban Renewal are proclaiming our love for summertime,
and what's more summery than house and garage? How about
brazilian-flavored broken beat and live musicians?
Urban Renewal Records presents:
BIG CITY: SUMMER LOVE
feat. DJs:
99 (http://www.beleza-music.org, Philadelphia PA)
Rob Rousseau (The Resonance Project, Raleigh NC)
Cooper (Urban Renewal Records, WXDU 88.7 FM)
and instrumentalists!
Joni Love (http://www.dulcesound.com, NJ)
The Applejuice Kid (http://www.theapplejuicekid.com)
Yep, we've got live musicians this month, so bring your hand drums and
your beads and we'll all have a big drum circle and just groove, man.
Sike! You know we don't get down like that. What we do have is some new
shit for you; broken beat is way underrepresented down here and we're
trying to fix that. Don't be scurred.
DJ 99 is the founder of beleza-music.org, a site dedicated to coverage
of the broken beat scene, and a wonderful DJ who rocked the party at
the Transatlantic showcase at WMC this year. She's got a fantastic
selection of broken beat and years of experience behind the decks, and
she recently repped Philly down in San Juan PR, where she played at the
legendary Candela Club, so she's got new hotness from Osunlade and
others. You'll shake your ass, yeah.
Joni Love is a wicked instrumentalist from Jersey who's played with
Masters at Work and appeared at NYC's legendary Shelter party, all
while holding down her own Friday residency at deep house / new jazz /
Brasilian beats party Dulce. Oh yeah, and she's played in Puerto Rico
too, with legendary bands including El Trio Los Condes. Joni is going
to kick it live on sax and flute with 99 and whoever else she damn well
feels like.
You know the Applejuice Kid already, whether it's from Sankofa, The
Remix Project, Mosadi, The Applejuice Orchestra, or any of his other
projects - this dude stays way busy! AJK is the baddest drummer in the
Triangle for sure, playing hip-hop, jazz, rock, d'n'b, hell, whatever.
The man transcends scenes. He's also got his solo album Plus+ in stores
now, and it very much reflects his love for broken-beat dance music.
We're very pleased to have him banging on things with us this month.
Rob Rousseau is so old-school. From founding WKNC's long-running
Afterhours mixshow to putting out two groundbreaking compilations of NC
electronic music as a founding member of the Resonance Project to
putting in countless hours of decktime all over, he's one of our local
unsung heroes. We wouldn't have what we now have without Rob... but
that's not as important as emphasizing that he is one KICK ASS DJ. I
mean, shit, he's been doing it for 10 years and some change. Rob is
going to play house and you are going to dance, and that's all there is
to it.
Cooper (hey, that's me) is going to go fishing for a more organic set
than usual, the better to compliment the evening. Odds and ends,
brokenbeat2stephousejazzgarage.
For those of you who missed out on getting your own copy of the
Transatlantic Bass CD, mixed by Cooper and full of unreleased garage
and broken beat from US producers, you can pick one up at the front
door! It'll be in your shops, anyway, and we'll be selling it online
real soon now; we'll be sure to let you know. Check
www.urbanrenewalrecords.com for more info.
Listen to Cooper on the friday night mixshow (wxdu 88.7 fm, 8-10 PM
fridays) for free tickets. *SPECIAL GUEST 6/4: DJ 99*
