The cut paper pieces from which the front page logo and the cover of the latest Beleza promo pack were made are the creations of artist, poet, vocalist and fashion stylist Emily Amarnick, aka Mrs. Pleasant. Emily has been doing it her own way since 1979. Since then, she's been creating from the heart, with her mix of abstract, found object, feminist-inspired mixed media pieces. The include collage, handmade paper, weavings, and greeting cards. As well as being an artist, she's also a fashion stylist. Whether it's through her art, her outfits or her food (this lady makes some killer soup) she's always creating. Emily is a Philly native but is making her big move to NYC in early June.
Here is an intro to Emily in her own words:
"In true Leo form, I had to be first. Not just a little early like a couple of days, but 3 months early! What can I say, I needed to get out into the world and create! Luckily my parents were able to tap into this trait pretty quickly. They definitely helped nurture this part of me, in the forms of unusual birthday parties, watching my dad sing in his band, and the ability to express myself pretty much how I wanted.
Needless to say, I've always been an artist. It's always been in me to create and make a statement. Whether it was spending hours picking out what to wear for school the next day, or starting a new art piece, it's always given me so much joy. I can't imagine not creating. It's who I am.
Along with my family I've definitely been blessed with some amazing people in my life. They've inspired me and helped me to grow as a person/creative being."
